Most boys begin weekly lessons 8 to 12 months before their Bar Mitzvah. The aim is that your son is fully ready 6 weeks before the date, so that the last weeks are for polishing and not for last-minute stress. That means the time to begin is earlier than most families expect. This page explains why, and how to work out when to start.
A Bar Mitzvah boy is learning several things at once: to read Hebrew well enough to follow the text, to say the blessings for an aliyah, to chant with the cantillation notes (taamim), and to prepare his own Torah portion. None of these can be rushed without a cost. Weekly lessons give the material time to settle between one lesson and the next, and a boy who has had time to practise reads with ease rather than from memory alone.
The 30-minute assessment turns these into a figure for your son in particular.
The aim is to be ready 6 weeks before the Bar Mitzvah, not on the week of it. Those weeks give room for what always comes up: a missed lesson, a cold, a school trip, a family event. They also let your son read the whole portion several times from start to finish, with the Rabbi, until it feels familiar. Boys who reach the Bar Mitzvah this way are calmer, and so are their parents.
Take the Bar Mitzvah date, then work backwards in two steps.
An example, with an invented date. For a Bar Mitzvah on 14 November 2027, your son should be fully ready by 3 October 2027. Starting 12 months before the date means beginning in mid-November 2026; starting 8 months before the date means beginning in mid-March 2027. Beginning earlier gives a calmer pace.
If the Bar Mitzvah is less than 8 months away, do not wait. Ask first. The assessment shows what is realistic for your son’s reading level, and lessons are arranged around the date you have.
Start with the Bar Mitzvah calculator, then book a 30-minute assessment with Rabbi Menachem Sabbah, who has taught Bar Mitzvah students for nearly 20 years. At the assessment you will receive a one-page plan with your son’s date and Torah portion, his reading level and how many months he needs.
